The first "House Party" and its remake share numerous visual and narrative elements, and part of the latter's appeal can be seen in all of its homages and references. The original "House Party" starred hip-hop duo Kid 'n Play (Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin) as high schoolers and aspiring party hosts. Like the first movie, both sets of friends in the story seem like an odd pairing—one is more sensitive and musically creative but shy about it, and the other is a nonstop instigator of bad but fun ideas and an incorrigible flirt. Cole and Latimore throw themselves into this dynamic with a charming rapport, switching between fighting against and for each other.

Kevin, now desperate for money due to him knowing he's fired and not starting his new IT job for another 2 months hesitantly joins in on the plan. Kevin asks Venus to supply him and Damon with the keys to the mansion, and she very reluctantly agrees.
About the House Party Series
Hip-hop had been on the rise for a decade, and by the late ’80s the preeminence of N.W.A. and Public Enemy had brought an ominous new profound power to hip-hop. In the summer of 1989, Spike Lee released “Do the Right Thing,” and that movie, with its fight-the-power core, was of course a Black cinematic apotheosis suffused with equal parts exuberance and trauma. Two desperate players try to stage the ultimate party at LeBron James's house, but the movie lacks the innocence — and the laughs — of its predecessor.
Critics Reviews
After failing to find him, Pop vows to wait for Kid at home. In his high-school cafeteria, Peter, also known as "Play," announces that he will be having a party at his house that night, as his parents are on vacation. Their friend Christopher "Kid" Robinson Jr. gets involved in an altercation with school bully Stab and his brothers, Pee-Wee and Zilla. At home, Kid tries to convince his father Christopher "Pop" Robinson Sr. to let him go to the party. After getting a call from school about Kid's fight with Stab, Pop changes his mind and grounds Kid for his actions. They soon decide to host the party of the year at an exclusive mansion, which just happens to belong to none other than NBA superstar LeBron James.
While Play plans a bachelor party, handles some raucous younger cousins, and deals with the arrival in town of Kid's ex-girlfriend, he also tries to bring success to a new female rap group called Sex as a Weapon. Fittingly, the "House Party" at James' home has a star-studded guest list. While main characters portrayed by Tosin Cole and Jacob Lattimore take the spotlight, the party will feature appearances from Kid N' Play, Anthony Davis, Odell Beckham Jr., Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and Big Sean among many others. James, who has a number of ventures in the entertainment industry, has had a major hand in the film, which is produced by his SpringHill Production Company, New Line Cinema as well as Warner Bros.

Is “House Party” in theaters or streaming?

"When a pair of down on their luck house cleaners discover they're assigned to clean the mansion of Lebron James while he's overseas, they decide to make a life-changing decision to throw a giant party in a quest for immortality and some cash." Aspiring club promoters and best buddies Damon and Kevin are barely keeping things together. Out of money, down on their luck and about to lose the roofs over their heads, they need a huge windfall to make their problems go away. But also, one outrageous ride stacked with double-take cameos and timeless throwback tracks, R-rated comedy and two friends worth cheering for… you have to see to believe. We actually still get a kick thinking about a young Martin Lawrence being told in the movie that he has "dragon breath." And we can't be the only ones who have actually done the Kid 'n Play dance routine at a party or two (even as a joke). It's in the vein of such nostalgia that many would-be viewers will be watching the Lebron James-produced reboot when it debuts.
'House Party' Release Dates
With the futures of the friends and their families on the line, Damon and Kevin plan an extravageant, celebrity-filled house party — with their fingers crossed the owner doesn’t catch wind of their plan. While this remix of "House Party" may leave some nostalgic for the original, it smartly doesn't try to copy the first film. However, it does stay true to the first version's celebration of friendship. Here's to the ones who have your back, the ones who make life interesting, and the ones who will find a way to throw a party at LeBron James' home with you.
House Party: Tonight's the Night
As of January 12, the new version has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 43%, which classifies it as "Rotten." The Hollywood Reporter simply says, "Turn down the invitation," while other reviews are a bit more mixed, saying there some elements of the movie that work. Damon and Kevin arrive back at the mansion to return the ring and end the party, but are interrupted by LeBron who returned from his trip early. LeBron intends to have the duo arrested, but Damon claims Kevin was not involved in the party and makes a wager that LeBron will let him go if he can beat the NBA superstar in a pickup basketball game. LeBron wins easily, and Damon is hauled off by the police.
But not all the punchlines land—like a jab about being paid "Mexican wages" in front of a Latino character, which takes a little fun out of the carefree atmosphere. However, upon reading Kid Cudi's poem, LeBron has a change of heart and works to get Damon released early from his jail sentence, following which he is picked up by Mya. Kyle and his gang are arrested after trying to sell LeBron's ring and the party causes Kevin to gain recognition and make money from his music.
House Party was released in the United States on January 13, 2023, by Warner Bros. The film received negative reviews and grossed over $9 million worldwide. But he'll leave his best friend and the girl he's had a crush on since 2nd grade. So he throws one last party that turns into a hilarious disaster.
